Dr. Spyros Sergiou

Dr. Spyros Sergiou graduated in 2012 from the Department of Geology, University of Patras and in 2015 completed his master’s degree in the same department specializing in ‘Marine Sedimentation Processes’. In 2022 he completed his PhD thesis at the Department of Geology of University of Patras under close collaboration with the Hellenic Centre of Marine Reasearch (HCMR), the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Bergen, Norway. His PhD thesis was entitled: Paleoceanographic and stratigraphic investigation in two semi-closed basins during Late Quaternary: the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Corinth thus contributing to the academic knowledge of hydrographic & climatic evolution of marine environments. He won a 2-year PhD scholarship from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) in 2017.

As of 2016 he has been employed as a Research Associate in the Laboratory of Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography (Oceanus-Lab) of the Department of Geology, University of Patras. His research interests regard geological and environmental oceanography with a special focus on the investigation of recent and former sedimentary processes in the coastal and marine environment through lithological, geochemical and micropaleontological proxies. He is also familiar with a range of marine geophysical methods and equipment. As a highlight, he has been involved in the ‘’IODP Expedition 381- Corinth Active Rift Development’’ contributing as a sedimentologist in both offshore and onshore operations. He has participated in more than 22 national and international research programs and surveys. He has published eleven (11) papers in journals and books of the citation index and has over ten (10) participations in conference articles and presentations. He has also co-authored eleven (11) unpublished technical reports under the needs of research and industrial projects. His work metrics exhibit 44 citations and an h-index of 3 and 4 in Scopus and Google Scholar respectively. In 2018 and 2019 he was announced as a VISTA Visiting Scholar in the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen, Norway.
